The Maldives History
The Maldives is a group of islands that was ruled by 4 different countries over time. During the 1600s, the Maldives continued to be overrun by the European powers that were conquering the parts of the world form east to west. First, the Maldives were ruled by Portuguese, then the Dutch, then the French. And later on in the years, the Maldives ended up becoming a British Protectorate. During those years in the 1900s, the Maldivian people learned how to self-govern them selves. The Maldives became an independent country in 1965. In the 1990s, the Maldives noticed that they were in need for excessive economic growth and the need for modernizing the nation for agriculture. And now, the biggest concern is the rising ocean levels.
